Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) and ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : semantic 气 (“air; gas”) + abbreviated phonetic 輕 (qīng, “light; of low density”).
Etymology[edit]
From 輕/轻 (qīng, “light; of low density”) in 輕氣/轻气 [19th c.]. So named as hydrogen gas is lighter than air.
